The RKO Hillstreet is visible on the left a block away.   full size view

Los Angeles Theaters Downtown - The Olympic Theatre in a 1951 view from the Los Angeles Public Library Collection.A 1951 view of 8th and Broadway. The Merritt Building is at the right with the Olympic Theatre facade in the center.

Broadway Theaters Los Angeles - The Merritt Building and, beyond, the vertical sign of Bard's 8th St. Theatre, later the Olympic Theatre, in a photo from the Los Angeles Public Library Collection. Here's a view of the Merritt Building on the corner of 8th and Broadway from the LAPL collection.

The library dates the photo as 1931 but it's possibly earlier as we don't see the new Broadway entrance for Bard's Theatre through this building.  It was a bank before becoming theatre lobby and retail.

Take a look down 8th Street and you can catch a glimpse of the Bard's vertical sign.   full size view

www.photobucket.com   This great 1931 postcard shows the marquee of the Bard's Broadway entrance in the classical white Merritt Building at right.

There's also a view of the Majestic vertical farther down the street (also on the right) just before the green Eastern Columbia building.

The marquee in the left foreground is the President Theatre, now the Globe Theatre.    full size view
